Shareholder warning

Shareholders are advised to be extremely wary of any unsolicited telephone calls, emails or letters concerning investment matters.

These could include, but are not limited to, offers to buy shares at discount prices, invitations to sell shares at inflated prices, unsolicited advice or offers of free reports.

Unsolicited contact often comes from overseas based ‘brokers’ who target shareholders offering to sell them what usually turn out to be worthless or high risk shares. Such operations are often referred to as ‘Boiler Rooms’, with the resulting scam being known as ‘Boiler Room Fraud’.

Fraudsters can be very persistent and extremely persuasive. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has reported that the average amount lost by investors is around £290,000. It is not just novice investors who fall victim of such scams, the FCA note that many victims have been successfully investing for several years.

If an individual or organisation contacts you and claims to be from, connected with or authorised by Spirax-Sarco Engineering plc, please be assured that we would never contact our shareholders in this way nor would we authorise any other individual or company to do so.

Details of any sharedealing facilities that the Company endorses will be included in Company mailings.

Protect yourself

If you are offered unsolicited investment advice, discounted shares, a premium price for shares you own, or free company or research reports, you should take these steps before taking any action:

  • Get the name of the person and organisation contacting you.
  • Check the FCA Register to ensure they are authorised before getting involved.
  • If in doubt, seek independent professional advice.
  • Remember, if an opportunity sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

If you use an unauthorised firm to buy or sell shares or other investments, you will not have access to the Financial Ombudsman Service or Financial Services Compensation Scheme if things go wrong.
